When you’re starting a photography business there are many things that you need to do – some more important than others.
Coming up with your photography logo design is an important step – it generally forms the basis for a range of other design decisions for things like your business card, your website and your advertising materials.
I know myself that anytime I’ve had to come up with ideas for a new logo I’ve struggled. I’m not really a visual thinker so find it hard to come up with any sort of starting point that I can give to a logo designer.
There’s a great resource that I’ve come across which I’m going to be using from now on for any sort of design project, including things like logos and business cards.
It’s a website called 99 Designs.
There are a whole bunch of things that you can have designed at the website, but in terms of your photography logos you have a couple of options.
Option 1 – Pre-Designed Logos
99Designs.comThe first is you can buy one of their pre-designed logo’s and have it customised for your business by having your business name and a tag line added.
This option is great for photographers on a budget.
A logo will cost you just $99 and with over 17,000 logos to choose from (sorted by category for easy browsing), you shouldn’t have too much trouble finding a photography logo design that you like.
You can click the banner on the left for more info.
Option 2 – Custom Logos…With A Twist
The second option is actually what’s made this website famous…and such a good option for small business graphic design.
The idea is simple. The website brings together designers from around the world with people who need something custom designed.
But it’s a bit different from the usual freelance style website in that each job is a competition.
Most freelance websites work on a job application process. So you’d submit your job description, designers would send you a resume and examples of past jobs and then you’d have to decide on a single designer to create your photographer logo.
99Designs.comBut with 99 designs you have multiple designers all creating photography logos based on the specifications that you lay out.
After a designer submits an entry you’re able to look at it and provide some direction on things you like or don’t like.
So what you end up with is a number of different photography logo ideas that you can look at and then you choose which one you like the most and that becomes your new logo.
And in a worst case scenario you like none of the photographer logos and you don’t have to pay any money at all.
So no more praying that your designer understands your brief.
No more ‘2 revisions only with this package…‘
You get to look at how a range of different designers interpret the directions you give them and make your decision based on potential logos you can actually use, not past logos created for other businesses.
What inevitably happens is that one or two designers will create something from left field that’s better than anything you could have imagined yourself, and your final photography logo design will be one that you’re far more happy with than you ever would have been by just hiring a single graphic designer.
And remember this is going to be the graphical representation of your business…so it’s well worth getting something that you’re truly happy with.
Then once you’ve got your logo designed, you can start using it in all other areas of your business like your business cards, web pages etc.
So if you don’t already have your photography logo sorted out I’d highly recommend you head over to 99 Designs and set up a project.
There’s definitely a much better chance that you’re going to end up with an awesome photography logo design that you’re proud to put on display.
